Int’l conference on Statistical Sciences begins at GCU

An International Conference on Statistical Sciences on Wednesday began at the Government College University Lahore under the auspices of the Statistics Department and the Punjab Higher Education Commission. 

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi chaired the inaugural session of the conference that brought together leading academic scientists from across the country to exchange their innovative ideas and research on the theme of “Applied Statistics & Sustainable Development Goals.”

Dr Ting Wang and Dr Mathew Parry from the University of Otago, New Zeeland joined the conference’s opening ceremony through a video link.

In his opening address, Dr Jamal Abdul Nasir, the Chairperson of the Statistics Department, said the world is rapidly changing with the modern technological advancements and policies are aided with evidence-based approaches. He said it was statistical science that played a vital role in the planning and implementation of smart lockdowns against COVID-19.  He also revealed that they had received around 52 research papers to be presented at the conference.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Zaidi said statistics are crucial for policymaking, and without authentic data effective policymaking is not possible. He added there exists wide gaps in official statistical data in Pakistan but it is the role of academia to explore and bridge these gaps. He also shed light on his humble contribution to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals through his research on healthy ageing. He said 2030 SDGs, also known as the Global Goals, is the most comprehensive agenda ever made and it is all based on statistics and also include indicators for growth 

Eminent academic scientists Prof. Shoail Chand, Ms Faiza Sharif and Dr Asifa Kamal were among the keynote speakers at the inaugural session of the conference attended by faculty members and students from different universities.
